Reckon/QuickBooks can run slow for a number of reasons. Sometimes this can be due to your computer or your network or the Reckon/QuickBooks Company Data File itself.
Are you having some of these symptoms?
It is slow when:
· Quick-zooming to open a transaction
· Opening Customer, Vendor or Employee Centres
· Opening, editing or saving a transaction (including paycheques)
· Creating an invoice from a sales order
· Opening history and Find windows
What can reduce performance may include:
· Lists are long and contain many elements that you no longer use or have a large number of inactive elements
· Customer list has many jobs underneath customers
· Account list has many sub-accounts
· Item list has many sub-items
· The Customer, Vendor and Employee Centres have custom-sorted name lists
Some Ways to Fix It:
One of the things in Reckon/QuickBooks that can slow down performance is all the Lists - Customers, Vendors, Items, Chart of Accounts, etc.
Caution - Before doing anything:
· Create a backup of your data file, in case you need to find the history of the unmerged elements.
*Note: Once you merge two elements together, you cannot unmerge them.
Custom Sorted Lists:
Open the appropriate “Centre” (customer, supplier and/or employee) that has performance issues. On the left of the Name column, ensure there is no diamond column. If there is a diamond column, click the diamond to remove it. You do not need to be in single-user mode to remove the diamond. Close the Centre and reopen it.
Customer List:
Old JOBS underneath Customers, or inactive CUSTOMERS, can be merged together. The merged customers and jobs lose their identity, so keep your back-up for history.
Vendor List:
Old, inactive Vendors from whom you no longer purchase goods - merge them together. The merged vendors lose their identity; so keep your back-up for history.
Employee List:
Old, inactive Employees no longer employed, can be merged together. The merged employees lose their identity, so be sure that you have all of their tax reporting up to date, printed and submitted to the appropriate tax agencies, and keep your back-up!
Chart of Accounts:
Using subaccounts to track source of income or use of expenses? Simplify - merge subaccounts together or into the parent accounts and set up Classes to do the tracking.
Item List:
Old and/or inactive items that you no longer sell can be merged. The merged items lose their identity, so keep your back-up for history.
