Dads and partners with an expectant wife/partner can get 2 weeks off unpaid as well as social payment while taking time off to support and be involved in the birth and settling of the new one at home (all going well).
The dad/partner can take 2 weeks off UNPAID, usually, and negotiate more time off with the employer if required. They can also get Centrelink / Services Australia financial support.
Summary:
- Unpaid Leave – 2 weeks up to 12 months;
- Centrelink can pay up to 2 weeks for Dad and Partner pay - staff need to apply for this, not employer. The Employer is paid and then will on-pay to the staff, less tax.
I consulted VCCI, Fair Work and also looked up the (Centrelink) Services Aust info for what to do.
Here are key links:
Dad and Partner Pay is Unpaid leave, from 2 weeks, up to 12 months – it’s one form of Parental Leave – see them all explained here:

If the staff want pay, they apply to Centrelink, who pay the employer, to on-pay to the staff member - up to 2 weeks of payments
