QuickBooks can slow down at times, so to improve speed and performance use the Verify and Rebuild utilities to improve data file speed and performance. Two other ways to improve are by ensuring the QuickBooks .TLG file does not become too large, and minimising the number of DB File Fragments, Follow these steps -
.TLG File
The .TLG file logs the changes to your company file (your .QBW file) since the last full QuickBooks backup was carried out. It is stored in the same folder as the QuickBooks company file. The transaction log file is named [company file name].QBW.TLG.
If you have not used the QuickBooks backup function for quite awhile (for example, because you use an independent backup up by a 3rd party program) then the .TLG file will become quite large, and this affects the speed and performance of your QuickBooks data file.
So, ensure regular backups of your data file using QuickBooks. In addition, for the .TLG file to be reset, you need to select the “Complete Verification” under the backup options, follow these steps:
- Go to File > Save Copy or Back up copy
- Select Backup copy and click Next
- Select Local backup and click the Options button
- Select Complete Verification (Recommended) and click OK.
DB File Fragments
Your QuickBooks file (yourcompanyfile.qbw) is sensitive to the number of fragments it has stored on your PC. If there are more than 50 fragments you will experience a reduction in performance.
To check and reduce the file fragments do this:
- Open your company file and press Ctrl 1 or F2 which will open the Product Information Screen.
- Half way down the screen on the left, you will see DB File Fragments. If more than 50 fragments are shown, then you will need to create a portable file from your data file and restore it. That is back-up and restore the backup as your continuing datafile
- Once the portable file is restored, press Ctrl 1 or F2 again and check if DB Fragments are now below 50.
If they are still above 50, you should defrag your PC’s hard drive.
